Pilates Class Essentials

So, you have finally signed up to try out that new Pilates class in town. The only trouble is you have never been to a Pilates class and you have no idea what to bring or what to wear. Since you do not want to stick out as a novice, here are a few quick tips and ideas to ensure that when you do step into your class you can blend in with all the other veterans.

The first thing to know is that most studios and fitness centres already have all of the pilates equipment you will need for your Pilates class so you do not have to necessarily go out and buy your own. However, if you do plan on pursuing the regime then you may want to invest in a workout mat. Pilates mats are thicker than yoga mats and many studios will actually sell their own. If you are unsure about what kind of mat to buy you should simply consult your instructor who will steer you in the right direction.

The next thing you need are proper workout clothes. You will need clothing that will stretch with you. Since Pilates is based on proper positioning of your body, it is important to wear clothing that is not too tight since your instructor will need to make sure that you are making the right moves. Also, clothing that is too loose can become a nuisance because some of the poses will require a lot of bending and stretching.

Another thing to keep in mind is to tie long hair back securely and to avoid wearing dangling jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets or very long earrings.

The one thing you will not need is shoes as Pilates is performed barefoot! The last thing you might want to bring along is a water bottle to keep hydrated.

So, while Pilates does not require any fancy equipment or high-tech gear it is best to be prepared in order to fully enjoy your class.
